Are there Psychological effects of Dyslexia?
There are several short and long term psychological effects of Dyslexia, some key examples are:
- Low self esteem
- Loss of motivation
- Feelings of frustration and stress
Due to persistent academic hardships caused by their condition, Dyslexic’s may be perceived as lazy by parents and teachers if the condition goes unrecognised. It is not surprising therefore that they may begin to lose confidence and motivation. This may well lead to negative behaviour.
It is worth noting that the psychological effects of Dyslexia will differ case by case and in relation to the person’s age at time of diagnosis. Those whose condition is recognised early, later or not recognised at all will be affected differently due to length of time without treatment.
Helping with the resulting emotional and social problems
It is important that whilst the problems with reading and writing are combated, the emotional and social problems caused by Dyslexia are not ignored and must be discussed. It may be beneficial in some cases to seek counselling to address these issues.
